~*~CHAPTER THREE~*~
DON’T PASS ME BY
(Antonio)
I sat among my frat brothers in deep thought. We were in the car headed towards Memphis to watch a night of talent. It was taking place at a black owned cheesecake bistro in down town. It was a small space so it was going to be fairly intimate. The place would be filled with original paintings for sale. There would also be a mix of spoken word, jazz and a special tap dance performance. I was excited to be going, but my mind kept thinking back to Karlie. She was really quick to leave. After she left I did a breath check and smelled my armpits. I just didn’t get it. For the past few months we had been making eye contact, but she just never seemed friendly enough to approach. I would smile, she wouldn’t smile back. It made her seem mysterious.  SO finally, when I seen her smile and we were alone, I decided to take my chances.
My frat brother hit me in the back of the head. “What kinda daiq do you want?”
I realized we had pulled up to the liquor store. “Not tonight. I’ll probably just get some brown at the show” I answered.
They hopped out the car and I stayed. It wasn’t long before they came back and we kept heading towards Memphis. They played the music so loud that I couldn’t continue to think if I wanted too.
We got there in about 10 minutes. The show was surprisingly dead. People don’t really appreciate stuff like this anymore. The art was really nice. One picture was a colorful piece of a young girl pretending to play the drums on a pot. She was using wooden stir spoons as her sticks. I wonder if that’s something my little sister would have done. I looked at my hand and twisted the ring on my finger.
If it wasn’t for my frat brothers, I wouldn’t really have family…..
