When thinking in terms of your personal style, would you say that Quality or Quantity is more important?
As a teenager, I definitely would have said Quality. I didn’t understand the concept of investing in good quality pieces, and layering with trendy pieces. I knew nothing of mixing and matching high and low end pieces to create unique looks. Accessories were not used to create my look…they were used, instead, to coordinate my look of the day.
I have definitely changed my tune as a fashion conscious adult. I am much more interested in the quality of product that I purchase, which has taught me to be creative when putting together an ensemble. I tend to spend more money on basics such as bottoms, jackets/blazers and handbags which are all classic pieces that will stand the test of time. When perusing my wardrobe, you will see several fun and trendy pieces sprinkled throughout that help add interest and flair to any look that I choose to create! These trendy pieces are regularly recycled, and replaced as we move from season to season.
If you’re looking to revamp your wardrobe, think of the following as you shop:
Garment Integrity:
Most will measure the quality of a garment based on the fabric. Will the fabric hold up over time? How many wears will you get on a garment from Forever 21 vs. Ann Taylor LOFT? How many washes will you get out of a top from Charlotte Russe vs. Nordstrom’s? You can also look at the overall weight of the fabric as a measure of quality. While a cotton tee is just a “cotton tee” to most…there are different weights that can dramatically affect the price and quality of a garment. This is why some shoppers tend to swear by a particular brand/designer. Focus on garment integrity when buying basics like pants, skirts, blazers, handbags and shoes.
*Classiques Entier Lace Moto Jacket, $161
*Balenciaga Trousers, $903
*Bebe Pumps, $159
*Diane von Furstenberg Clutch, $195
Personal Validity:
Some will measure the quality of a garment by how valuable it may be to self. How important is this garment to your overall style? Is it versatile enough to create many different looks? What does the garment say about your personal style? Is is wearable over a long period of time? Or are you least likely to wear it this time next year? Trendy, bargain friendly pieces typically fall under Personal Validity. This is also often where Quantity reigns over Quality. Focus on personal validity when shopping for fun, trendy pieces such as printed tops, pants or shoes. Costume jewelry often falls under this category, especially if its considered trendy and won’t be worn the following year.
*AX Paris Dress, $24
*Dorothy Perkins Pumps , $24
*Urban Expressions Bag, $30
*ModCloth Pendant Jewelry, $25
The Conclusion:
Garment Integrity is very important, as you want your pieces to last a long time. Especially if you are dishing out a great deal of money! However, Personal Validity is what comes to mind when you think of a trends that change with the seasons.
Fashionistas tend to have pieces in their closets that fall under BOTH categories. Their wardrobes are fully stocked with staple pieces (slacks, blazers, etc), and are layered with trendy pieces that are often recycled from season to season.

*Vince Camuto Patent Leather Platform Pumps, $110

If you are looking to re-vamp your wardrobe, I encourage you to invest in good quality staple pieces that you will stand the test of time. Round off your wardrobe with a few trendy, pocket book friendly pieces that you won’t mind parting with once they are no longer in season.
